favorite authors

January 31, 2019

Confession time. Every now and then, someone says I’m their favorite author or one of their favorite authors. First off, this is hugely flattering. I know how I feel about my own favorite authors, and to be able to do that for someone else? That’s amazing. It’s a gift.

But… I also think, “Oh no, you must not have read [my own favorite author] yet! Because they should really be your favorite author, not me!” I want to give them Robin McKinley, Ray Bradbury, Lois McMaster Bujold, and a dozen others. The real favorite authors, you know?

I’ve learned not to say that out loud. But I’m almost always thinking it.

Well, you ARE one of my favorite authors. I wait eagerly for books from you and a handful of other authors and get impatient when the collections of words aren’t in print yet (usually immediately after the previous volume is finished and put on the shelf). I’m impatiently waiting for the next books from James S.A.Corey, Kelley Armstrong, Jim Butcher and Ramez Naam, among others.

Your hardback books of mine reside on a shelf with my Lois McMaster Bujold firsts and my Heinlein collection. Bujold has at least partially eclipsed Heinlein as one of my favorite authors, and I may never have known Bujold if not for reading a following your work.

I read on a Q&A page from a few years ago that you had not read Clarks Rama series. Have you since been able to correct that omission?
