it’s important to have hobbies

February 6, 2015

I posted this on Facebook earlier this week.  This is what I made for myself after I finished making everyone presents for Christmas:

This is not the nerdiest thing I’ve ever done.  But it’s right up there.

I’m also coming to believe that it’s things like this — working with my hands, being an unapologetic fangirl, that sort of thing — that will ultimately keep me from burning out.  It’s important to have hobbies.  Especially when your job is also your favorite hobby.

I think a lot of us writerly types are creative in other ways too. I haven’t tried my hand at cross-stitch yet but I embroider, sew, quilt, make jewelry, and generally enjoy anything that is even remotely crafty. And yes, I agree that it’s important to find other outlets for that creativity so that you don’t get burned out on one thing :o)

It also helps to have accompanying talent. There was a brilliant scientist in the Manhattan project who had a fill time watcher whose sole task was to keep him from EVER touching a wrench or screwdriver. Couldn’t have won the war without him, but Yikes…not sure I’d trust him with pointy objects either.
