Very cool…the first time I showed my cousin Saturn through a telescope, she couldn’t believe that you can actually see the rings.

You got to move the dome? How does it work??

Hmm. The first thing that went in my head was “Wondering if the observatory is part of STAR labs?” (A geek reference for Carrie to get) 😉

    STAR labs…heheheheheh….

The dome is on a track that’s electrically operated, so there’s a toggle that moves it clockwise or counter clockwise, depending on where the telescope is facing. The entire dome moves.

This is a little telescope, 16″ I think. On the bigger telescopes, the scopes themselves are automated so they can track the same object in the sky as the earth rotates, and the dome is linked to the scope so the opening automatically tracks with the scope.

Now that you don’t have the telescope handy there’s still the Perseid meteor shower.

Plug your location and general light level into the tool and it’ll tell you when to go stand outside.

Perseids are number 7, and peak intensity is around the 12th August.
